Not all roads lead to new adventures and/or new misadventures. Some, thankfully lead back to the things and people that you know best and who know you. There is a calmness that comes with such adventures. There is no need to try to impress, or worry about what others are thinking. It is easy. There is a peace that comes with what is already known, “Oh, that is just Tom and Rene’, she is mom’s crazy friend, or the Groom’s boys mom, or…” whatever the case may be. My friendship with Susie began almost 15 years ago when life’s adventures took us to Arlington Oregon. Luke, our second son, became fast friends with Carly (one of the ever so beautiful daughters of Susie), and Thomas with Zac, Susie’s son. I think it would be unfair to say we were friends because of our kids, as I tend to think we would have been friends kids or no kids. Susie is strong, independent, with an unyielding can-do spirit, and I have always been attracted to that kind of person.
Over the years Susie and her family have allowed Tom and I to tag along through their adventures. Our friendship is unique, we dont talk all the time, neither of us are phone chatters, but it never takes any time for us to fall right into life conversations.
We have watched each of the kids grow and become amazing adults, full of love and immense talent. It has been a joy to be able to sit on the sidelines and cheer them on, even if it seems we are the crazy “Aunt and Uncle’ that never seems to go away. 🙂
There are moments, when my spirit is tired, that these back roads to the familiar feels comfortable, and the easy relationships of long times friends, comforts like a healing salve.
Some friends are just “Forever Friends.” Thank you Susie for always sharing your passion for life and your family, my life is richer because of it.
