As recent as five years ago, I would not have fancied myself a flower farmer. Herbs have always been my “jam,” and on a good year I could grow some pretty yummy veggies, but flowers, I never dreamed.
But, as God often does He dreams bigger for us, then we do ourselves. He expanded my world with daughter-in-laws, and granddaughters who love pretty things… preferably in pink and purple.
A couple of years ago, I asked each of the grands what they wanted granny to plant in their little garden beds… being boys…. Everett requested cantaloupe and watermelon. Izzy requested pumpkins and cucumbers… My Kellie Girl wanted flowers and I panicked. Not just a little panic attack but a full on, where is my inhaler kinda panic.
That first year, I was grateful for the grace my little Kellie offered by being thrilled with Sunflowers, Nasturtium, Calendula and other herbie flowering plants. Every year I improve. This year my offerings more align with her, Vera and Edie’s gleeful likings.
I could never have imagined the joy I would find in growing flowers… adding them to my herb and veggie beds. Nor could I have understood that the time I spend tending them affords me the space to pray over those sweet babies… the world I’m leaving them, the boys they will someday marry… and all the stuff in between.
It is just like our Heavenly Father to grow us into ourselves all while teaching us more and more about who he created us to be. I’ve surprised myself simply by being willing to expand my borders.
So go ahead… surprise yourself.
